Amreli Steels prolongs rolling mill shutdown in Karachi as industry woes persist

Amreli Steels Limited has extended the suspension of operations at its Karachi S.I.T.E. rolling mill for another six months, citing ongoing operational and economic pressures in the steel sector.

The company’s board, after reviewing current conditions, said the economic challenges that prompted the initial shutdown in September 2024 remain unresolved and, in some cases, have worsened. A further review will be conducted after six months, with resumption dependent on a significant improvement in the overall economic environment.

Amreli added that its Dhabeji facility, which represents the bulk of its production capacity, continues to operate, ensuring the company can meet current and expected market demand. The S.I.T.E. plant accounts for around 30pct of Amreli’s total production capacity.

Amreli Steels is one of Pakistan’s leading steel producers, with a billet production capacity of 600,000 tons and rebar manufacturing capacity of 605,000 tons.
