JSW Steel’s green energy transition takes a leap as JSW Energy commissions India’s largest green hydrogen plant in Vijayanagar, Karnataka. The facility will supply green hydrogen directly to JSW Steel’s direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, supporting low-carbon steel production.
Under a seven-year offtake agreement, JSW Steel will receive 3,800 tons per year of green hydrogen and 30,000 tons per year of green oxygen. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding outlines supply of 85,000-90,000 tons of green hydrogen and 720,000 tons of green oxygen annually by 2030.
JSW Energy currently has 30.5GW of locked-in generation capacity, including operational, under-construction, acquisition, and pipeline projects across thermal, renewable, and hydro sources. The company targets 30GW generation and 40GWh energy storage by FY2030 and aims for carbon neutrality by 2050.
JSW Energy and JSW Steel are sister companies under the JSW Group, a multinational conglomerate with diverse holdings.
JSW Steel’s consolidated crude steel capacity stands at 35.7 mln tons per annum, including 1.5 mln tons in the U.S., with plans to expand to 43.4 mln tons within three years.
