Voestalpine Donawitz awards contract for automated scrap-yard cranes

Voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH has awarded Danieli a contract to supply five fully automated scrap-yard cranes, which will be integrated with the Danieli Scrap Yard Management System (Q3-DYMS), at its Donawitz site in Austria.

The order follows recent contracts for two new electric arc furnaces and semi-automatic EAF charging cranes, forming part of the company’s broader program to transition toward green steel production.

The new cranes will incorporate advanced automation features such as absolute positioning systems, intelligent video monitoring (Danieli Eye-On), electrical anti-sway controls, regenerative drives, and systems for scrap classification and volumetric yard inventory detection.

Designed to operate with either electromagnets or electrohydraulic grabs, the cranes will support efficient, autonomous, and energy-saving scrap-handling operations.
