CMC obtains approval for construction of rebar mill in West Virginia

Commercial Metals Company (CMC) has received approval from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to proceed with the construction of its micro mill.

With the necessary permit secured and land acquisition completed, CMC is now set to initiate construction with the goal of achieving its targeted commissioning date in the calendar year 2025.

The upcoming micro mill is anticipated to boast an annual capacity of 500,000 tons, making it a significant addition to CMC’s production capabilities. The mill will be equipped to produce a wide range of sizes for both straight length and spooled rebar.

CMC Steel’s micro mill, which has been ordered from Danieli, is currently in the engineering phase.

Danieli’s micro mill is based on the “regional/product-oriented” mill concept. The innovative mill design features a relatively lower production capacity, making it ideal for catering to regional markets. It is specifically engineered to focus on producing a specific product while leveraging local scrap supplies extensively. By aligning with the local market demands and utilizing nearby scrap resources, the micro mill maximizes efficiency and sustainability in its operations.

CMC and its subsidiaries engage in the manufacturing, recycling, and fabrication of steel and metal products. The company’s extensive network of facilities encompasses seven electric arc furnace (EAF) mini mills, three EAF micro mills, one rerolling mill, steel fabrication and processing plants, construction-related product warehouses, as well as metal recycling facilities in the United States and Poland. Among its primary products are rebar, merchant bars, and wire rods.
