Alfa Laval’s new heat exchangers incorporate low-emission steel from SSAB and Outokumpu

SSAB, Outokumpu, and Alfa Laval have formed a strategic partnership to reduce the carbon footprint of Alfa Laval’s plate heat exchangers by up to 60pct. The collaboration integrates SSAB’s fossil-free SSAB Zero steel and Outokumpu’s low-emission Circle Green stainless steel, showcasing how local innovations can drive global climate impact.

This initiative will be implemented in the Laakso Joint Hospital project in Helsinki, set for completion by 2030. The City of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) are redeveloping the hospital area with a strong focus on energy efficiency and reduced emissions. As part of the new cooling system, five Alfa Laval Concept Zero TL10 gasketed plate heat exchangers will be installed in 2025, contributing to lower operational and upstream emissions.

The heat exchangers use SSAB Zero steel in the frames and pressure plates, while Outokumpu’s Circle Green stainless steel is applied in the channel plates. Given that steel production accounts for 7-9pct of global CO2 emissions, the use of low-emission materials in steel-heavy equipment like heat exchangers is a significant step toward more sustainable industrial solutions.
