ArcelorMittal Industeel has inaugurated a new vertical continuous casting installation at its Le Creusot site in France, representing a total investment of EUR 52 mln (USD 61 mln), including EUR 12 mln (USD 17.6 mln) in state support under the France 2030 programme.
The project, launched in February 2024, expands the site’s steelmaking capabilities by enabling the production of thin slabs, complementing the existing ingot casting route and providing greater operational flexibility.
The new unit is expected to streamline production by eliminating an intermediate rolling stage, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, and shortening lead times. Output from the installation is projected at around 15,000 tons initially, with capacity set to increase to 25,000 tons per year.
The investment is also expected to reduce CO2 emissions at the Le Creusot site by approximately 10pct, supporting the company’s decarbonization strategy.
With the addition of continuous casting, the site now operates two casting routes, enhancing competitiveness and enabling further development in carbon steel, stainless steel and nickel-based alloy markets, particularly for energy and industrial applications.
The project was supported by the French government as part of efforts to strengthen industrial competitiveness and reduce emissions in the steel sector.
ArcelorMittal Industeel is a producer of specialty steel plates, ingots and forged products, serving niche, high-value markets requiring advanced metallurgical properties. The company operates production facilities in France and Belgium.
