Canon integrates recycled steel into printing devices for sustainability

Canon Inc. has started incorporating recycled steel into its printing products, including office multifunction devices (MFDs), inkjet printers, and commercial presses, with plans to expand usage in 2025.

By using electric arc furnace produced steel, which emits one-fifth of the CO2 compared to blast furnace steel, Canon aims to contribute to decarbonization efforts. Steel, the second most-used material in Canon’s printing products, has been optimized for use in their designs.

Canon Ecology Industry Co., a group company, separates steel scrap from used MFDs and supplies it to Tokyo Steel, an electric furnace steelmaker. From April 2020 to March 2024, over 5,000 tons of scrap were provided to Tokyo Steel.

Canon plans to increase the use of recycled steel in its products to further promote resource recycling. Canon has set recycling targets of 20pct for 2025 and 50pct for 2030. In 2023, its resource recycling rate rose to approximately 17pct, driven by efforts to improve sorting accuracy and the reuse of materials across its global recycling operations.
