Jindal Steel Oman awarded UK-based carbon recycling technology company PeroCycle a feasibility assessment contract to evaluate the integration of carbon recycling technology at its steel production facilities in the Port of Duqm, Oman.
The study will assess the application of PeroCycle’s patented technology for recycling industrial off-gases generated during steelmaking back into the production process as feedstock, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions and lowering reliance on fossil-based reducing agents.
According to PeroCycle, the technology was developed at the University of Birmingham and is designed for use in steel, cement, and chemical industries. The company stated that the system could reduce carbon emissions in steelmaking by up to 90pct and can be integrated into both new and existing production facilities.
The feasibility study will focus on technical integration with existing gas recovery systems, process design, economic and environmental assessments, and implementation planning for the Duqm steel complex.
Jindal Steel Oman stated that the assessment forms part of its long-term sustainability strategy and efforts to explore lower-emission steelmaking technologies.
Jindal Steel Oman, part of India’s Jindal Group, operates across multiple steel and raw material businesses in Oman. Jindal Steel Sohar, formerly Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel, is one of the largest privately owned integrated steel producers in the GCC, operating a 2 mln tons per year gas-based DRI plant, a 2.4 mln tons per year melt shop with EAF and ladle furnace facilities, and a 1.4 mln tons per year rebar mill.
The group further expanded its long steel operations through the acquisition of Sohar Steel in 2023, adding 700,000 tons per year of long products capacity, followed by the recent acquisition of Moon Iron and Steel Company (MISCO), which has annual rebar production capacity of 1.1 mln tons.
In addition, Jindal Steel Duqm (Vulcan Green Steel) is developing a 5 mln tons per year green steel complex in the Duqm Special Economic Zone in two phases, with operations expected to start by the first quarter of 2027. The group also operates Jindal Pelletizing LLC in Sohar, with annual iron ore pellet production capacity of 6 mln tons.
