Outokumpu to supply low-carbon stainless steel for Alstom’s metro rail cars

Outokumpu, a global leader in sustainable stainless steel, has partnered with Alstom, a leading provider of smart mobility solutions, to supply Outokumpu Circle Green, a stainless steel with up to 93pct lower carbon footprint than the global industry average.

The first delivery is set for 2026 and will be used in the next generation of Alstom’s Metropolis metro train cars. The collaboration supports both companies’ Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments and aligns with the EU’s climate neutrality goals for 2050.

As urbanization drives demand for greener transport, the partnership helps Alstom pursue its goal of reducing emissions from procured goods and services by 30pct by 2030, while increasing the recycled content in its products.

Circle Green is the first stainless steel of its kind with verified, product-specific carbon footprint data. It is already used by over 40 major companies across Europe and Asia to advance their sustainability targets.
