SSAB and Volvo Cars Partner on decarbonized steel for EV production

SSAB and Volvo Cars have signed a landmark agreement for the delivery of SSAB Zero steel, set to begin this year. Volvo becomes the first automaker to commit to using decarbonized steel in series production.

SSAB Zero is the world’s first commercial steel made from recycled scrap using fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in near-zero fossil carbon emissions. It is available in various grades and dimensions while meeting strict safety and performance standards.

The steel will be used in key components of Volvo’s upcoming fully electric EX60 SUV and other models based on its next-generation SPA3 architecture.

SSAB launched SSAB Zero in 2023 as part of its goal to eliminate fossil carbon emissions from operations. Volvo aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and reduce CO2 emissions per car by 65-75pct by 2030, compared to 2018 levels.
