SSAB has signed an agreement with Nordic construction firm NCC for the planning and execution of major building and civil engineering works for its upcoming steel mill in Lulea, Sweden. The project is a central part of SSAB’s strategy to produce fossil-free special and premium steel.
The agreement covers the eastern section of the Svarton site, which will include two electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, and a direct strip rolling mill. The new facility will replace the current blast furnace-based system, with operations expected to begin by the end of 2029.
The area under NCC’s scope spans about 40 hectares, including a 15-hectare building complex. NCC is also working on SSAB’s transition project in Oxelosund, which aims to cut Sweden’s total carbon emissions by 3pct.
