Tata Steel has appointed three South Wales contractors to support its GBP 1.25 bln (USD 1.61 bln) green steelmaking investment at Port Talbot. The contracts, awarded to Bridgend-based Darlow Lloyd and Sons, Wernick Buildings, and Swansea-based Andrew Scott Ltd., will create over 300 skilled jobs in the local supply chain.
Darlow Lloyd and Sons will handle early-stage excavation, recycling, infrastructure, and drainage work, critical for the transition to Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking. Andrew Scott Ltd. will construct essential infrastructure, including a new scrap yard to process UK-sourced recycled steel for the EAF.
This milestone follows Tata Steel’s recent appointments of Sir Robert McAlpine as the project’s main works contractor and Tenova as the supplier of the new electric arc furnace.
Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2025, marking a major shift in steel production at Port Talbot. Once fully operational in 2028, the EAF is expected to cut the site’s carbon emissions by 90pct, reducing CO2 output by five mln tons annually.
