Tata Steel to scale up sustainable steelmaking in India and Europe

Tata Steel plans to produce 10-15 mln tons of steel through recycling over the next 10-15 years, as part of its strategy to adopt low-carbon steelmaking technologies in India and Europe, CEO and MD T.V. Narendran said.

In FY25, the company produced 30.92 mln tons of steel across its global operations, out of a total capacity of 35 mln tons spanning India, the UK, the Netherlands, and Thailand. Tata Steel aims to expand its capacity in India to 40 mln tons by 2030.

In the UK, the company is transitioning from traditional blast furnace production to a scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) at its 3 mln tons per annum Port Talbot plant in South Wales. “We’ve shut down the blast furnaces and are building an EAF,” Narendran said. “In the Netherlands, we’re in talks with the government for a similar transition. By 2035, we won’t have any blast furnaces operating in Europe.”

Tata Steel’s Netherlands plant in IJmuiden produced approximately 6.75 mln tons of liquid steel in FY25. In India, the company operates with a steelmaking capacity of over 26 mln tons and an additional 1.7 mln tons in Thailand.

Tata has also established a recycling plant near Delhi and is constructing a 0.75 mln tons per annum recycling-based unit in Ludhiana, expected to be completed by the end of FY25.
