Thyssenkrupp exits AST with sale of remaining stake to Arvedi

Germany’s Thyssenkrupp has sold its remaining 15pct stake in Italian stainless steel producer Acciai Speciali Terni (AST) to the Arvedi Group, completing the transaction agreed in 2021 for the sale of the steelmaker and its related distribution operations.

The completion of the deal gives Arvedi full ownership of AST. Thyssenkrupp had retained the minority stake following the 2021 sale to support operational cooperation during the transition period.

Thyssenkrupp added that the divestment forms part of its ongoing strategic transformation and portfolio optimization efforts, aimed at increasing financial flexibility and sharpening its focus on core businesses.

AST is the only integrated stainless steel producer in Italy and has a crude steel production capacity of around 1.3 mln tons per year.

Arvedi Group is Italy’s largest privately owned steel producer, with annual output exceeding 6 mln tons. The company manufactures hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized flat steel products and is known for its proprietary Arvedi ESP technology. Arvedi also operates stainless steel tube businesses through subsidiaries including Ilta Inox and Tubificio di Terni.

Thyssenkrupp Steel is Germany’s largest flat steel producer, serving the automotive, machinery, packaging and household appliance sectors. The company operates an integrated steelmaking network centered in Duisburg and produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated flat steel, electrical steel and tailored automotive blanks.
