Vinton Steel LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of Japan’s Kyoei Steel Ltd., has awarded a contract to Pomini Long Rolling Mills for a new bar rolling mill at its site in El Paso County, Texas. The project is part of the Green City Mill Flex initiative, which integrates eco-efficient steelmaking, casting, and rolling technologies developed with Tenova to produce high-quality long products with lower carbon emissions, energy use, and operating costs.
The Green City Mill Flex concept sets a new standard in long steel production, emphasizing efficiency, flexibility, and environmental sustainability. It supports circular economy principles by leveraging the local scrap recycling supply chain, reducing the environmental footprint of steelmaking in urban areas.
The contract signing was held on February 3, 2025, at Kyoei Steel’s headquarters in Osaka, marking a significant step in the company’s North American expansion.
Tenova will supply a full range of technologies including a new Consteel EAF melt shop, multi-strand billet caster, material handling systems, fume and water treatment plants, and electrical distribution systems.
Pomini Long Rolling Mills will provide the complete rolling mill, featuring a hot link to the continuous caster for endless rolling and increased yield. The train will include the latest Red Ring stands with BRG guides, an inline thermo-processing system, and cooling facilities connecting to finishing areas previously delivered by Pomini. The mill will also produce high-carbon plain rounds for grinding balls.
Startup is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
