Tata Steel Nederland halts flat steel plant over emissions

Tata Steel Nederland has temporarily shut down its Direct Sheet Plant (DSP) at the IJmuiden site following elevated emissions, the company said in a statement.

The shutdown was implemented after measurements showed that emissions of hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) from one of the plant’s chimneys exceeded permitted limits. The decision was taken in coordination with the regional environmental authority.

The company said the suspension is a precautionary measure and will remain in place until additional technical and organizational actions are completed and compliance with environmental standards is confirmed.

Tata Steel Nederland added that it is working on measures to reduce emissions and ensure safe operations before restarting the facility. The timeline for resuming production has not been disclosed.

The Direct Sheet Plant is part of the IJmuiden steelworks and produces flat steel products.

Tata Steel Nederland is a subsidiary of the India-based Tata Steel Group, focusing on high-quality strip steel for demanding sectors such as automotive, construction, and packaging, with an annual crude steel production capacity of 7.5 mln tons per annum.
