Emirates breaks ground on USD 5.1 bln engineering complex

Dubai-based airline Emirates has broken ground on a new USD 5.1 bln engineering complex at Dubai South, which is set to become one of the world’s largest and most advanced aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities.

The project will be developed by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), while Artelia has been appointed as project consultant.

The facility will span around 1.1 mln square meters, making it one of the world’s largest buildings by volume and the largest steel structure in the GCC.

According to Emirates, the complex will include hangars capable of simultaneously servicing 28 wide-body aircraft, in addition to two aircraft paint hangars. The project will also feature a 285-meter free-span hangar, dedicated landing gear workshops, repair and maintenance facilities, logistics and storage areas, office space, and training centers.

The new engineering complex forms part of Emirates’ strategy to expand its in-house engineering and maintenance capabilities while supporting Dubai’s aviation infrastructure development plans linked to Al Maktoum International Airport.

Construction is scheduled for completion by mid-2030, with the facility initially supporting heavy maintenance operations and overflow projects from Emirates Engineering Centre at Dubai International Airport.
