Tata Steel and the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering have launched a three-year research and innovation partnership to advance sustainable, recycled and circular materials, with a focus on applications in construction and manufacturing.
The programme is supported by nearly GBP 1.9 mln (USD 2.5 mln) from the UK government, alongside up to GBP 1 mln (USD 1.32 mln) in matched funding from Tata Steel. It is expected to support up to 15 projects involving universities, research organizations and businesses in India and the UK.
Projects will be jointly led by academic or research partners in both countries and are expected to develop practical applications with industrial or commercial potential. The programme is scheduled to begin in April 2027.
Tata Steel will provide industrial mentoring, technical expertise and access to laboratories and facilities. Projects with commercialization or spin-out potential may also receive mentoring and incubation support.
The partnership aims to improve resource efficiency, strengthen supply-chain resilience and accelerate the development of lower-carbon materials and processes. It will also support policy missions to exchange knowledge and market intelligence on circularity and resilient supply chains for critical materials and minerals.
The initiative will be delivered through the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Transforming Systems through Partnership programme, which has supported more than 300 collaborative projects connecting universities and industry across partner countries.
Tata Steel is among the world’s leading steel producers, with annual crude steel capacity of around 35 mln tons.
