British Steel launches carbon capture trial at Scunthorpe plant

British Steel has launched a carbon capture trial at its Scunthorpe plant using groundbreaking technology to reduce carbon emissions, the company announced in a press release. While electrification of the steelmaking process is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 75pct, British Steel is seeking additional reductions in CO2 intensity.

To support this initiative, a mobile carbon capture pilot plant has been installed at the Central Power Station in Scunthorpe. Developed by the University of Sheffield, this plant will extract carbon from the power station’s boiler flue. British Steel’s participation is part of a broader project aimed at using waste gases from industries like steel and glassmaking to create an alternative carbon source for consumer products.

The technology, known as FluRefin, was developed by Professor Peter Styring and Dr. George Dowson in partnership with AESSEAL, a Rotherham-based seal manufacturer. FluRefin is an award-winning, next-generation carbon capture technology that operates without hazardous chemicals or heat. Instead, it utilizes a novel pressure swing adsorption process to produce purified, dry carbon dioxide.
