SSAB said steel produced at its Raahe mill in Finland is being used in the construction of the world’s largest cruise ships at the Meyer Turku shipyard.
The shipyard has completed the third Icon-class vessel, Legend of the Seas, for Royal Caribbean Group, with delivery scheduled for July 2026. The fourth and fifth vessels are currently under construction, while two additional ships are planned for delivery in 2029 and 2030.
SSAB supplies standard and high-strength shipbuilding steel plates from its Raahe mill for hull structures, deck sections and other key components. The company said the long-standing partnership with Meyer Turku is supported by an efficient rail-based supply chain that helps ensure reliable deliveries for large-scale shipbuilding projects.
SSAB added that shipbuilding steels account for around one-fifth of its plate business and that it is developing lower-emission steel solutions to support the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
SSAB is a producer of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel products, with an annual crude steel production capacity of approximately 8.8 mln tons across operations in Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
