Meranti signs green HBI offtake agreement with Thyssenkrupp Materials Trading

Meranti Green Steel has signed an offtake agreement with Thyssenkrupp Materials Trading (TKMT) covering the supply of 1 mln tons of green hot briquetted iron (HBI).

Meranti said TKMT’s established trading network and market reach across Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium are expected to support wider adoption of green HBI in Europe.

The green HBI will be produced in Oman and is positioned as a feedstock suitable for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers, including small and mid-sized mills. According to the company, the product is designed to provide consistent metallic input, stable melting performance, and high steel quality while complementing scrap usage.

Meranti added that the HBI is engineered to deliver low CO2 intensity from the outset, with scope for further emissions reductions over time through increased use of green hydrogen. The company said the product is intended to be commercially competitive, allowing steel producers to reduce emissions without materially impacting cost, quality, or operational efficiency.

Meranti Green Steel is building of a 2.5 mln tons per annum HBI plant in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), with commissioning targeted for mid-2029.
