Salzgitter secures renewable power from new Iberdrola solar plant

Salzgitter AG will source renewable electricity from a newly completed 65 MWp solar power plant developed by Iberdrola in Saxony-Anhalt, supporting its transition toward low-carbon steelmaking.

The facility, located in Schadewohl, will generate around 60 GWh per year, all of which will be supplied to Salzgitter under a power purchase agreement and used for green steel production.

The solar park, spanning 45 hectares and comprising more than 92,000 modules, will feed into Salzgitter’s SALCOS programme, aimed at reducing emissions across steel operations.

Iberdrola said the project underscores its commitment to decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, while Salzgitter highlighted the role of strong partnerships in enabling low-CO2 production processes.

The Salzgitter Group is a leading German steel producer with annual crude steel capacity of around 7 mln tons. The group operates through four main business units coordinated by Salzgitter AG: Steel Production, focused on strip steel, heavy plate and other steel products for sectors such as automotive and construction; Steel Processing, which includes downstream activities and globally recognized brands such as Mannesmann; Trading, covering international steel distribution; and Technology, comprising specialized engineering companies including KHS, a global leader in beverage filling and packaging systems.
