BHP posts record iron ore output in H1 FY26

BHP Group reported record iron ore production and shipments in the first half of FY26, driven by strong supply chain performance, the miner said in its operational review for the six months ended 31 December 2025.

Iron ore production from BHP’s Western Australia operations, on a 100pct basis, reached a record 146.6 mln tons in H1 FY26, up 1pct YoY. In the second quarter alone, output rose to 76.3 mln tons, compared with 70.2 mln tons in the previous quarter.

BHP said its Western Australia operations achieved record first-half production and shipments, positioning the business well ahead of the typically wet third quarter. Volumes from Samarco also increased, supported by strong operational performance at the second concentrator following its restart at the end of H1 FY25.

Iron ore sales were higher YoY, with lump sales rising 3pct. The company said it is currently negotiating annual contract terms with the China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG), noting that ongoing efforts to optimize product placement and maintain operational flexibility have had some impact on realized prices.

BHP expects FY2026 iron ore production to range between 284 mln and 296 mln tons on a 100pct basis.

BHP Group is a leading global resources producer with core exposure to iron ore, copper and metallurgical coal, operating one of the world’s largest iron ore businesses primarily in Western Australia, alongside assets in Brazil.
