SAIL secures long-term gas supply from GAIL, advances renewable push at Burnpur

India’s state-owned steelmaker Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has signed a strategic long-term agreement with GAIL, country’s largest state-owned natural gas company, for the supply of natural gas starting November 2027.

The agreement, valid for five years, is expected to support expansion plans at SAIL’s Burnpur steel plant in West Bengal, while enabling cleaner, more reliable and sustainable steelmaking through increased use of gas-based processes.

Separately, SAIL has selected Prostarm Info Systems Ltd for the supply, installation and commissioning of a 2 MW (AC) rooftop solar photovoltaic system at the Burnpur plant, according to a regulatory filing by Prostarm. The project is scheduled to be completed within 12 months.

The initiatives underscore SAIL’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce carbon intensity at its integrated steel operations.

SAIL currently produces around 20.6 mln tons of crude steel annually and is targeting an expansion to 35 mln tons per year by FY2031. The company operates five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants across India, producing a wide range of flat, long, special, and railway steel products.
