AM/NS India has become the first integrated steelmaker in India to receive Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly introduced green steel taxonomy, the company said.
Following an independent audit, AM/NS India’s hot-rolled flat steel products were awarded a four-star rating, while its cold-rolled products received a three-star rating. The taxonomy, introduced in December 2024, classifies steel based on carbon emissions intensity during production. Under the framework, steel emitting 1.6 tons of CO2 or less per ton of finished steel qualifies for a five-star rating, while emissions of 1.6-2.0 tons receive four stars and 2.0-2.2 tons are rated three stars.
AM/NS India said the certification reflects its progress in low-carbon steelmaking, supported by structurally lower-emission processes and large-scale renewable energy integration, while reinforcing India’s position as a competitive and sustainable steel producer.
AM/NS India is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. It currently operates with crude steel capacity of 9 mln tons per year and pellet capacity of 20 mln tons, and plans to expand steelmaking capacity to 15 mln tons by 2026, with a longer-term target of 40 mln tons by 2035 through new greenfield projects in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
