Spanish firm wins order to supply trains for Haramain high-speed rail project

Saudi Arabian Railways has signed an agreement with Talgo to purchase 20 new high-speed trains to expand the fleet serving the Haramain high-speed railway linking Mecca, Medina and Jeddah.

Under the contract, Talgo will manufacture and maintain the trains, adding around USD 1.54 bln to its order book. Deliveries are scheduled to begin at the end of 2028, with the full fleet expected to be delivered by 2031. The new trains will be technically equivalent to the 35 units Talgo supplied in 2018, each comprising two power cars and 13 coaches with capacity for 417 passengers.

The order forms part of Saudi Arabia’s plans to expand passenger rail capacity to meet growing demand. Talgo will also continue to maintain the expanded fleet of 55 trains under an extended operation and maintenance agreement running until 2033, with an option to extend to 2038. Talgo manages two maintenance facilities in the Kingdom.
