Celsa’s Nervacero to modernize reheating furnace at Vizcaya plant

Nervacero, part of Celsa Group, has selected Fives to upgrade the energy efficiency of its reheating furnace at the Vizcaya plant in Spain, aiming to improve operational performance and reduce carbon emissions.

The project will modernize a walking hearth reheating furnace originally supplied by Fives in the 1970s and upgraded periodically since then. Key works will focus on the furnace roof, walls, and waste gas duct, with a complete redesign of the recuperator to raise combustion air temperature and significantly improve thermal efficiency.

As part of the upgrade, existing regenerative burners will be replaced with ultra-low NOx AdvanTek burners, while flue, air, and gas circuits will be adapted to the new operating conditions. The furnace layout will also be optimized to improve space utilization around the installation.

Detailed engineering is underway and procurement activities have started, with the project progressing on an accelerated schedule supported by close cooperation between Nervacero and Fives.

Celsa Group operates around 7.5 mln tons per year of steelmaking capacity and produces a wide range of long steel products, including rebar, wire rod, and structural steel products.
