Steel imports fall sharply in 2025 – AISI

Based on final U.S. Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that total U.S. steel imports in full-year 2025 reached 25,241,000 net tons (around 22.9 mln metric tons). Finished steel imports totaled 18,665,000 net tons (approximately 16.9 mln metric tons).

These figures mark YoY declines of 12.6pct in total imports and 17.1pct in finished steel imports compared with 2024. Finished steel accounted for an estimated 14pct of U.S. steel consumption in December and 18pct for the full year 2025.

Canada remained the largest supplier in 2025 with approximately 4.1 mln metric tons, followed by Brazil (3.7 mln metric tons), Mexico (2.6 mln metric tons), South Korea (2.4 mln metric tons) and Germany (about 1.0 mln metric tons). Products showing significant import growth in 2025 compared with 2024 included tin plate (up 24pct), line pipe (up 19pct), wire rod (up 13pct) and oil country tubular goods (up 13pct).
