ArcelorMittal completes consultation on proposed Ghent closure

ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks has concluded the information and consultation phase with employee representatives regarding the proposed closure of its tailored blanks facility in Ghent, Belgium.

The site, which employs around 90 people, has been under review following several years of accumulated losses, reflecting declining volumes and margin pressure amid weak demand in Europe’s automotive sector, the core market for its laser-welded blanks.

During the consultation, management and labour representatives held extensive discussions on the restructuring plan and agreed on a social plan to mitigate the impact on employees. The plan ensures continued employment within ArcelorMittal Belgium at existing pay levels for those who remain, while offering voluntary departure packages with financial compensation.

The proposal was approved by 71.11pct of affected employees on February 20, 2026, the company said. With the consultation phase completed, the final decision on the proposed closure will now rest with ArcelorMittal’s board of directors, it added.
