Hydnum Steel advances green steel project with 500 MW power allocation

Hydnum Steel has secured a key milestone in the development of Spain’s first clean steel plant after obtaining access to 500 MW of electricity capacity at the Brazatortas grid node in Ciudad Real. The allocation, published in the Official State Gazette, is sufficient to power the project’s electric arc furnace and enables the company to move forward with construction.

The fully digitalized plant will produce HRC using 100pct renewable energy, targeting a 98pct reduction in emissions compared with conventional blast furnace operations. The project aims to support European industries in decarbonizing their supply chains while helping address the EU’s structural flat steel deficit, with the bloc importing around 11 mln tons annually.

Hydnum Steel plans to produce 1.5 mln tons per year in the first phase, with capacity expected to rise to 2.7 mln tons in a later stage. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.
