Hyundai Steel has commissioned the first foundry-rated robotic wire rod coil trimming and sampling system at its Dangjin wire rod mill in South Korea following final acceptance of the project supplied by Primetals Technologies.
Known as TrimRob, the automated system was developed by Primetals Technologies in collaboration with robotic solutions provider Polytec. The technology automates coil trimming and sampling operations using a vision system capable of identifying wire rod rings, tangles and overlaps without operator intervention.
The company said the system improves workplace safety by reducing manual handling of hot wire rod coils while enhancing trimming accuracy, product quality and operational efficiency. TrimRob is designed to process wire rod sizes ranging from 5.5 mm to 20 mm across various steel grades.
Hyundai Steel, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, is one of South Korea’s largest steel producers, manufacturing a wide range of flat and long steel products for the automotive, construction, shipbuilding and machinery sectors.
