AM/NS India to build new steel plant in Andhra Pradesh

AM/NS India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel, plans to establish an integrated steel project in the Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh, targeting a capacity of 17.8 mln tons. The proposed investment for this ambitious project is INR 1.4 lakh crore (USD 16.6 bln).

In the first phase, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel will construct a blast furnace steel plant with a capacity of 7.3 mln tons per annum, involving an initial investment of INR 80,000 crore (USD 9.5 bln). For this phase, the company has requested 2,600 acres of land.

The second phase will add another 10.5 mln tons per annum to the plant’s capacity, with an investment of INR 60,000 crore (USD 7.1 bln) and an additional 2,000 acres of land.

The project aims to incorporate green steel technology and focus on high-value sectors such as the automotive industry, thereby reducing India’s reliance on steel imports. The selection of the site was influenced by critical factors such as land availability and proximity to Nakkapalli port. AM/NS India is also seeking approval for a dedicated jetty to facilitate the import of raw materials from global suppliers.

Scheduled to break ground in January 2025, this project is part of AM/NS India’s ambitious goal to achieve a production capacity of 40 mln tons per annum by 2035.
