BHP and HBIS sign MOU to scale up steel decarbonization projects

BHP and HBIS Group have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen their strategic collaboration on decarbonizing the steel value chain. This builds on successful initiatives since their 2021 partnership and marks a key step in expanding cooperation to steel end-users and advancing the industry’s low-carbon transformation through life cycle carbon reduction projects.

Since their first MOU, BHP and HBIS have completed trials on enhanced lump use in blast furnaces, initiated a carbon capture pilot, and tested DRI-EAF at HBIS’s hydrogen metallurgy plant using BHP’s Pilbara iron ores.

The new MOU focuses on scaling up blast furnace abatements, optimizing Pilbara iron ores in commercial DRI-EAF steel production, and conducting life cycle assessments to track greenhouse gas reductions. It also aims to foster talent and knowledge sharing in the industry, aligning with BHP’s climate goals and establishing scalable, best practices for decarbonization.
