ArcelorMittal expands sustainable ethanol production from steel industry emissions

ArcelorMittal S.A. and LanzaTech Global, Inc. announced a milestone at ArcelorMittal’s Steelanol facility in Ghent, where ethanol production has reached a volume sufficient for barge shipments. LanzaTech took title to the first barge shipment earlier this month, with the ethanol on its way to be purified and sold to customers in the fragrance and home care markets.

The Steelanol facility, using LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology, converts carbon-rich emissions from the blast furnace into fuel-grade ethanol. Production began in 2023, and the plant is the first of its kind in Europe. With a capacity of 80 mln liters per year, it supplies around half of Belgium’s current demand. Ethanol can be sold for fuel or further processed for use in consumer products like apparel, personal care, and packaging. This project is part of ArcelorMittal’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 125,000 tons annually and support the EU’s 2030 Climate Target Plan. The initiative also aims to develop a sustainable European ethanol supply chain.
