Steel Dynamics to install advance robotic tagging systems at Roanoke plant

AIC has been awarded a contract by Steel Dynamics Inc. for robotic tagging applications at its Roanoke plant. The project involves the installation of advanced robotic islands to automate steel bundle tagging on both rolling mill outlets, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.

The robotic systems will apply printed tags using metallic studs, guided by a 3D vision system to identify optimal tagging spots. One island will include options for applying a second tag or a sticker tag for specific products. Both systems feature QR code readers to verify printed tag data with the plant’s tracking system, ensuring consistency. A dispenser for up to six colored tags will identify special bundles, such as defective ones or end-of-heat items.

To ensure uninterrupted operation, each robotic island is equipped with two thermal transfer printers in a backup configuration, capable of handling up to 10,000 tags. The system achieves a maximum cycle time of 20 seconds for double tagging and 30 seconds for both a stud tag and a sticker.

Steel Dynamics, a major steel producer and recycler, operates facilities across the U.S. and Mexico. The company’s portfolio includes hot and cold-rolled steel, structural beams, rail, specialty steel, liquid pig iron, and ferrous and nonferrous scrap processing.
