SAIL and John Cockerill to set up electrical steel plant

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and John Cockerill India plan to invest nearly INR 6,000 crore (USD 693 mln) to establish a downstream plant for producing cold-rolled grain-oriented (CRGO) and cold-rolled non-oriented (CRNO) electrical steel.

The plant will use HRC supplied by SAIL as raw material and is expected to be developed at one of SAIL’s existing plants.

The project is scheduled to begin operations between 2027 and 2029, with an annual production target of 1.5 mln tons. SAIL also plans to set up an electric arc furnace to produce green steel as part of this initiative.

In November of the previous year, SAIL signed a memorandum of understanding with John Cockerill India to collaborate on green steel technologies and innovation, focusing on carbon steel, green steel, and silicon steel.
