ROGESA upgrades blast furnace in Dillingen to extend service life

ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar GmbH in Dillingen, Germany, has commissioned SMS group for a comprehensive modernization of blast furnace 4 (BF4) to extend its service life and improve hearth lining monitoring. The contract includes planning and delivering the Paul Wurth hearth lining and multi-thermocouple sensor probes (MTPs), along with technical support during installation.

Measurements in 2023 revealed more advanced wear on BF4’s hearth than expected, with wall thickness nearing the wear limit. Built in the late 1970s and last relined in 2016, BF4 has a usable volume of 2,460 cubic meters and produces 6,400 tons per day.

SMS will utilize Paul Wurth’s durable hearth lining technology, incorporating carbon blocks, ceramic cups, and refractory materials for optimal thermal insulation, corrosion resistance, and structural support. MTPs will provide precise wear monitoring for enhanced efficiency.

The project, expected to conclude by Q3 2025 with a 55-day shutdown.
