Algerian Qatari Steel (AQS), located in the Bellara industrial zone in El Milia, Jijel, exported nearly 700,000 tons of steel products in 2024, generating over USD 360 mln, according to Deputy General Manager Sofiane Chaib Setti.
Chaib Setti emphasized that the high quality of AQS’s products allowed the company to enter 36 international markets, supporting Algeria’s objective of increasing non-hydrocarbon exports.
In 2024, AQS produced over 2 mln tons of steel, with 66pct sold domestically and 34pct exported. The company plans to increase its exports to 2.7 mln tons from an anticipated annual production of 4 mln tons after the second phase of its expansion project is completed in 2028.
Established in 2013 through a collaboration between Qatar and Algeria, AQS is a joint venture with 49pct ownership by Qatar Steel International and 51pct by Algerian stakeholders. The AQS plant’s main production units include a Midrex DRI plant with an annual capacity of 2.5 mln tons, two EAF melt shops, with total annual production capacity of 2.2 mln tons and three rolling mills, with total annual production capacity of 2 mln tons of rebars and wire rods.
