Tata Steel is set to decommission the Coke Oven Battery #7 at its Jamshedpur Works on January 27, 2025, after an impressive 36 years of service.
Commissioned in 1989, this was India’s first stamp-charge coke oven battery, a pioneering innovation that set new standards in efficiency, sustainability, and coke-making technology.
During its operational life, the battery produced over 12 mln tons of coke and played a key role in transforming India’s steel industry, according to Tata Steel.
The decommissioning process will begin with isolating the battery from the by-product plant’s foul gas suction network. As part of the shutdown procedure, raw gas from the ovens will be safely flared through oven top flares and ascension pipes, following standard operating protocols. The flaring will commence on January 27, 2025, and is expected to continue for nearly 24 hours.
Tata Steel, with an annual crude steel capacity of 35 mln tons, remains one of the world’s top steel producers.
