Steel Dynamics completes final phase of Roanoke mill modernization

Steel Dynamics has awarded AIC a contract to upgrade the automation system at its Roanoke Bar Division rolling mill in Virginia, USA. The project involves replacing the existing control system with a new PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) software to improve efficiency, reliability, and adaptability.

The upgrade includes designing tailored system architecture, ensuring hardware and software compatibility, defining control logic, and integrating new automation features. AIC will develop custom PLC and HMI software to streamline mill operations, providing operators with an intuitive control interface.

The project scope also covers validated software packages, comprehensive documentation, and configuration files for smooth installation and future maintenance. The commissioning phase will include system fine-tuning, real-world performance validation, and operator training to ensure a seamless transition.

This initiative marks the final phase of a multi-stage modernization project at the site. Once completed, the upgraded control system is expected to enhance production efficiency, minimize downtime, and support long-term operational success, AIC stated.

Steel Dynamics Inc. is one of the largest steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated annual steelmaking and coating capacity of 13 mln tons. It operates facilities across the U.S. and Mexico.
