The British government has welcomed Heathrow Airport’s multibillion-pound expansion program, which is set to drive significant demand for UK-made steel and help secure thousands of steel jobs nationwide.
Heathrow’s investment covers new terminal buildings, aircraft stands, passenger infrastructure, and its long-planned third runway. As part of this initiative, Heathrow will sign the UK Steel Charter at an event hosted at British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant, reinforcing its commitment to sourcing domestic steel wherever possible.
This pledge marks a major win for the UK steel industry, ensuring strong demand for British-made steel and safeguarding jobs at Scunthorpe and beyond. Heathrow’s expansion is expected to require vast amounts of steel, Terminal 5 alone used 80,000 tons by its completion in 2008, while estimates suggest the third runway could need up to 400,000 tons.
