Tata Steel orders new acid regeneration plant for Port Talbot Works

Tata Steel has contracted international technology group Andritz to supply a new acid regeneration plant for its Port Talbot Works in Wales. The facility, scheduled for commissioning in late 2027, is designed to meet stringent environmental standards and support the planned expansion of the site’s pickling line.

The plant will regenerate up to 6,340 l/h of waste acid, maximizing reuse in the pickling process and reducing waste generation. It is engineered to operate efficiently at both the current pickling capacity of 1.2 mln tons per year and the planned increase to 1.8 mln tons.

Project Manager Paul Boxer noted that the new system will eliminate the need to import large volumes of fresh acid and export spent liquids, calling it a big step to decarbonize the company’s pickling operations.

The installation will incorporate Andritz’s latest exhaust-cleaning technology, designed to deliver emissions well below regulatory limits. Its ECOmode function is expected to deliver significant energy savings, especially once the expanded capacity comes online. Advanced process control, high automation levels, and modern cybersecurity systems will ensure stable and safe operation.

Andritz’s scope includes the design and supply of all mechanical and electrical equipment, along with supervision of installation and commissioning.
