ArcelorMittal to boost clean energy supply for Indian steel operations

ArcelorMittal has announced three new renewable energy projects in India totaling 1GW of solar and wind capacity. Once completed, the projects will double the company’s renewable capacity in India to 2GW and raise its global renewable portfolio to 3.3GW.

The developments include a 36MW solar project in Amaravati, Maharashtra, expected to be completed in the first half of 2027; a 400MW solar project with 500MWh battery storage in Bikaner, Rajasthan, targeted for completion by the first half of 2028; and a hybrid 250MW wind, 300MW solar, and 300MWh battery storage project in Bachau, Gujarat, also scheduled for completion by the first half of 2028.

Total capital expenditure for the three projects is estimated at USD 0.9 bln. The power generated will be supplied to AM/NS India, ArcelorMittal’s 60:40 steelmaking joint venture with Nippon Steel.

In parallel, AM/NS India is developing its own renewable project in Bachau, Gujarat, a 550MW installation combining 300MW of solar and 250MW of wind, with expected annual CO2 savings of 0.9 mln tons.

Together with ArcelorMittal’s earlier 1GW renewables project in India, the combined initiatives are expected to deliver 4 mln tons of annual CO2 savings and meet around 35pct of the electricity needs of AMNS India’s Hazira steel plant by 2028, following its expansion to 15 mln tons per year of steel capacity.

ArcelorMittal is also advancing renewable energy projects in Brazil and Argentina, with its India, Brazil, and Argentina portfolio collectively expected to provide 3.3GW of power generation once fully operational.

AM/NS India, a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is a leading integrated flat carbon steel producer in India. The company operates with a crude steel capacity of 9 mln tons per annum, along with 20 mln tons of pellet capacity and a diverse portfolio of flat and value-added steel products.
